This laboratory experiment explores the emission spectra of various metal ions using flame tests. By observing the colors produced when metal salts are heated in a flame, students will learn about the relationship between energy levels and light emission.
The objective of this lab is to identify metal ions based on the characteristic colors they emit when heated in a flame.
- Metal salt samples (e.g., sodium chloride, copper sulfate, lithium chloride)
- Burner or Bunsen burner
- Wooden splints or metal loops
- Safety goggles
- Lab coat
- White tile or ceramic dish
- Put on safety goggles and a lab coat.
- Light the burner and adjust the flame to a steady blue flame.
- Dip a clean wooden splint or metal loop into a metal salt sample.
- Place the sample in the flame and observe the color produced.
- Record the color and repeat for each metal salt sample.
- Compare the observed colors with known emission spectra to identify the metal ions.
